Maranda Pleasant: What makes you come alive or inspires you?

Zola Jesus: Being in the mountains.

MP: What makes you feel vulnerable?

ZJ: Society.

MP: If you could say something to everyone on the planet, what would it be?

ZJ: “We are the problem.”

MP: How do you handle emotional pain?

ZJ: Writing music or eating chocolate.

MP: How do you keep your center in the middle of chaos? Do you have a daily routine?

ZJ: I like to remind myself that everything is meaningless.

MP: What’s been one of your biggest lessons so far in life?

ZJ: Let go.

MP: What truth do you know for sure?

ZJ: Nothing matters.

MP: What causes or organizations are you passionate about?

ZJ: Preservation of privacy and autonomy.

MP: Tell me about your latest projects.

ZJ: My new record Taiga is out now! Currently on tour in support of the album.

MP: Why are these important to you?

ZJ: It’s what I devote my life to.

MP: What is love for you?

ZJ: I feel like I am alone when I am in the presence of those I love. It is so freeing and comfortable, you become one with them.

MP: What is the most important thing for us to do as beings?

ZJ: To be aware of our position in the world on a micro and macro level.
